L-Glutamine is the "all-rounder" of amino acids. Did you know that it is involved in more than 60% of the body's basic processes? That's how important this amino acid is, but... what is L-Glutamine used for?
It belongs to the group of non-essential amino acids, meaning the body can produce it naturally by synthesizing it through the amino acids found in food. Its main function is to transport nitrogen, so that the body's metabolic activities can be carried out... and we thought it was only for after training!
Effects of L-Glutamine on the body
Okay... so what does that translate to in my body when glutamine acts? Nothing less than:
- It participates in the synthesis of proteins and in muscle recovery.
- It improves cellular function, including brain function.
- It is a source of metabolic fuel.
- It promotes proper liver function, helping to eliminate waste substances (ammonia in the kidneys).
- It regulates pH.
- It strengthens the immune system.
- It regulates blood glucose levels.
- It helps increase muscle mass and promotes muscle recovery after intense training sessions.
- It improves cell volume, hydration, and permeability, which aids recovery after intense workouts.
- It prevents catabolism.
- It improves the intestinal mucosa, which strengthens defenses and prevents stomach and intestinal problems or peptic ulcers in cases of prolonged stress.
- It promotes recovery in cases of bumps, injuries, and burn rehabilitation.
- It reduces depression, regulates mood, prevents anxiety, insomnia, and the irritability that stems from these situations.
Why is it recommended for athletes?
This is how glutamine acts in our body, and, although it is produced naturally in the body, and we can find glutamine in many high-protein foods, when situations of mental and physical stress, injury, or illness arise, its demand increases, making it necessary to take it in the form of supplements.
That is why it is highly valued in sports, especially by high-performance athletes.
How to take L-Glutamine?
In general, it is recommended to take between 5 and 10g of glutamine daily, and depending on the case and needs, you can take it:
- Before training
- After training
- Before going to sleep
- On an empty stomach
- Added to meals or protein shakes
All options are correct and equally effective. My favorite and recommended way is to take it in powder form like Victory's L-Glutamine.
However, the winning combination, even more powerful for athletes, is to take it with BCAAs such as BCAA 8:1:1+L-GLUTAMINE or BCAA+L-GLUTAMINE caps.
After learning what L-Glutamine is for, and even if you don't do any sports, if you want to take care of your health and especially prevent problems, you can safely use L-Glutamine supplements, don't you think?
